Jane and Brian Spencer of F I N K E L seem to arrive from the near future, or perhaps somewhere out there, appearing with a slight shimmer of a dimension adjacent to our own. With an atmosphere treading the periphery of pop, the duo’s tangible vocal presence overlays hypnotic electro pulsations in a combination that teases out details of last night’s otherworldly dreams and tempts the waking state to return to its astral analog.
Not quite definable by conventional genres, their avant-garde sensibilities will appeal to an audience seeking a respite from the pedestrian daily grind and typical expectations. There’s an enchanting quality that pervades the work of this singing and songwriting combo. Their lyrics explore themes of love and desire; understanding oneself and one another beyond surface qualities; and questioning the status quo. With every track, they’re suggesting we take another, closer look, because what we think we see and hear just might deserve inspection.
While it remains unclear where these two have been, it’s evident enough that they’re here now. She triggering a MIDI mixing board, he on guitar, their vocals intertwine with a shadowy fluidity that invokes notions of another time; perhaps the middle of next week. They sense you wondering what you’re doing then, and invite you back to the present with a wink.
A tale of two spirits unravels curiously from the seams of F I N K E L’s new singles. Their ethereal synthetic textures and rich vocal harmonies produce an aesthetic that grabs attention and gives it a nudge. The result somehow distills the mood of a strange day’s fleeting moments into a potent, lingering hex. Like the feeling of a passing glance with a mysterious stranger, we’re left assured we just encountered something ineffable, and wondering if someone else felt it too.

War Baby is a heavy power trio from Vancouver, Canada. The group is comprised of two Albertans, songwriting kindred spirits Brock Allen (vocals, bass), Jon Redditt (vocals, guitar) and Australian born drum savant Kirby Fisher (drums, vocals). The group’s RIYL (which runs the gamut of alternative, proto-punk and noise rock greats) is both relevant but also limited as they always stir their influences professionally.

Bio: The family quilt of Americana music is long and well worn. With stitches that took hold hundreds of years ago, the legacy of forlorn lyrics sung over spare, twinkling instrumentation depicting long nights, whiskey glasses and love that too often walks out the door extends further than any can remember. And it will continue well past anyone kicking up mud today. But with each passing sunset, we can see new patches added to the legacy. And the next name to be sewn in is FRETLAND.
The Snohomish, Washington-based, sister-fronted band plays songs that dash over hills, harmonize with the breeze and coax honey from tall trees.
Co-founded by Hillary Grace and Kara Belle Fretland, the group also includes the tasteful Jake Haber and subtle Luke Francis on bass and guitar and thumping Kenny Bates on drums. FRETLAND’s self-titled, 11-track debut album, which is due out in early 2020, includes the epic, “Long Haul,” reflective, “Have Another Beer,” and revelrous, "Friendly Fire."
While still a new group, FRETLAND has accomplished much. The sisters, who have been singing together since 2008, worked with sonic stalwarts on their first full length, including engineer Nich Wilbur (Angel Olsen, Black Belt Eagle Scout), mixing artist Trevor Spencer (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes) and mastering expert Ed Brooks. The band, rife with energy and momentum, has already created one of those strong foundations that allows for a long story to unfold in great detail and with much revelation.
