The Architect
The Architect has been an influential staple in the west coast hip hop scene for nearly three decades. From producing Coolio’s hit single “I Remember” feat J-RO (Tha Alkaholiks, Tommy Boy/Warner Bros. 1994), to gracing the stage with such hip hop legends as Planet Asia and Souls of Mischief. In 1993, The Architect teamed up with neighborhood friend Peanut Butter Wolf who was establishing Stones Throw Records. The Architect blazed the trail for Stones Throw Records by producing four of its fundamental releases: “Defined By The Dollar” (Encore), “Armed and Dangerous” (Persevere), the “Fraudulent” EP and the underground classic “Cash Money”. The latter two of these releases featured his own group, Homeliss Derilex. The Architect’s production style stitches hypnotic bass lines, stuttering drum kits, and major and minor chords with soulful psychedelic samples and precise scratches. His unique style has put him in demand with many of hip hop’s greatest. His impressive catalog continues to grow and includes Ab-Soul, Azeem, Cali Agents, Coolio, Dave Dub, Del the Funky Homosapien (Gorillaz), Encore, Equipto, Fat Lip, Gold Chain Music, Grand the Vis, Homeliss Derilex, Killa Kali, King Medallions, King Solomon, Kool Keith, Kungg Fuu, Lyrics Jones, MF Grimm, Mika 9, Mista Sinista, Opio (Hieroglyphics Crew, Souls of Mischief, Vultures Wisdom), Peace (Freestyle Fellowship), Pep Love (Hieroglyphics Crew), Persevere, Planet Asia, Prince Po (Organized Konfusion), Ras Kass, Rasco, Rob Swift (The X- Ecutioners), Sir Mickey Rocks, Souls of Mischief, Turbin, and Vultures Wisdom. When in the studio with his boutique style production equipment, The Architect is flipping beats on the fly with the SP-404, Maschine, analog mini synths and vinyl scratches over his addictive head nodding boom bap beats. The Architect’s studio production has been featured on such bangers as “Egyptian Merchandise” (Planet Asia), “Debate” (Gold Chain Military) and “American Hunger” (MF Grimm).
